We arrived in Strasbourg by train from Paris, and got to explore the city for a day, before starting our bike trip around France in 80 days. We got really lucky since the sun decided to pop out for our arrival ! We were quite excited since the whole centre of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here is our photo day trip diary and tips we can give you if you want to follow our footsteps.
The Vauban dam
This is the first view we got on Strasbourg and probably the best. I took the picture from the terrace of the Vauban dam, or “Great Lock”, built in 1690, overlooking the Covered Bridges.
La Petite France
Next to the Vauban Dam is the Petite France area, a typical quarter of Strasbourg built around the canals and showcasing traditional Alsacian buildings and houses.
Lunch at Le Troquet des Kneckes
From La Petite France you enter the “island” of Strasbourg which is the city centre, surrounded by the canal. There we stopped for lunch at the Troquet des Kneckes, and got to taste one of Alsace most traditional dish : the Flàmmeküeche.
The 11th century gothic cathedral was the highest Christian edifice until the 19th century with its 142 meters high spire. It is remarkable by its numerous sculptures on the façade, its rose window, monumental organ and astronomical clock built in Renaissance. If you visit during lunch time, you can admire the procession of apostles (every day at 12.30pm). You can walk the 300-ish steps up the tower and admire the view for 5€.
The Citadel Park
After a day of sightseeing around Strasbourg, enjoy a moment of calm in the Citadel Park on the outskirts of the city centre where are located the remains of the 17th century Vauban fortress designed to defend the Rhine bridge.
This is a pretty good itinerary for a sunny day in Strasbourg, next time we visit we’ll have to explore more of its cultural heritage though !
